File is corrupt. Fake Files by Disguising Themselves as Legitimate Ones There was something about this job that didn't seem right, but my wallet said there was too much money to possibly be found. I started googling for reviews of the company, but google seemed to refuse to show any links to them with anything less than five stars. I hesitated before opening the file, but when it came up clean in an online virus scan I thought it had at least passed some sort of integrity check and opened the file containing what looked like instructions on how to operate a tractor trailer. Turns out it was instructions on how not to get caught by antivirus software. I don't think I'm the only one who thought this way. There are lists out there of antivirus company websites, and even some lists of fake malware websites, complete with their IP addresses - lists which are often freely available on the internet. These fake websites are used to disguise viruses. The virus will be disguised as an executable that is very similar to an executable that the antivirus software would normally detect; however instead of executing malicious code it runs a program that shows off its own adware, trojans, or whatever the creator's purpose is. This cycle is frequently referred to as Viral Advertising or Click Fraud. If you think Viral Marketing has gone too far, it's easy to hack this program. I didn't hack it, but I did dig around inside the program and found out some things about its inner workings. The first one was that if you were reading instructions for something like a car you would probably want to stick with the manual for a while before trying "instructions" about how to operate a tractor trailer. I also found out that clicking on links in a software-driven viral ad is a bad idea, as most legitimate websites will not run any kind of advertisement attached to them. It was inevitable that the real antivirus companies would start fighting back. McAfee has made an attempt by adding an indicator to their software that says "This is a legitimate website" when you visit one of these pages, which is quite helpful. However, since these pages are often hosted on regular websites that contain regular content the indicator may not appear. The other option would be that even if it did appear, you could just click on it to make it go away. It's also worth noting that things like fake websites and fake executable programs aren't exclusively bad things; the computer game "Super Mario Clone", for example, uses fake executables in its viral marketing campaign.
